Organisational Coaching – 5 Factors for Success

Over the last 5 years West Sussex County Council, have run a fascinating project which has aimed to enhance learning and teaching through coaching teachers and leaders. The county have established what they call The Coaching Training Unit (CTU). Lesley Smith who heads up this CTU has been instrumental in encouraging some 40 schools and colleges to use coaching as a continuing professional development (CPD) tool, with startling success. With an objective eye I have had the privilege of overseeing the project as Coach and Mentor. I have been able to draw out certain generic success factors from their extensive work. In short, the establishing of coaching within whole organisations for CPD purposes seems to require certain key factors to be in place for colleagues to be able to meet together and share practice and coach one another towards change. These factors can be summarised in the following diagram:
